Winterize Your Bangor Home Before Heading South

3/11/2022 (Permalink)

Frozen puddle of water on ceiling This frozen puddle on the ceiling was caused by a broken bathroom pipe and the heat going out in the middle of winter.

If you are a snowbird heading south for the winter, there are several things you can do to help protect your home while away.  Following these tips will help reduce chances of a loss in your Bangor home when you are gone.

  • Make your home look like it's occupied - forward or stop your mail, stop newspaper delivery, arrange for someone to remove snow from driveway and walkways, install motion detector exterior lights, and interior lights on timers.
  • Protect your pipes - consider completely turning off the water supply if you will be away for an extended period of time.  If you turn the water supply off, drain your pipes by opening faucets, and flushing toilets to clear the water from the tank and bowl.
  • Keep your home and plumbing warm - if you do keep your water supply on, keep your furnace running to help ensure the home stays warm and the pipes do not freeze.  Make sure to set the temperature at 55°F or higher.  Keeping room and cabinet doors open can also help heat to circulate and warm areas where pipes are located.  Shut off water to washing machines and dishwashers to avoid leaks or broken hoses.
  • Perform routine maintenance before leaving - have your heating system inspected and serviced by a licensed professional before the cold weather hits.  Have your roof inspected and clean your gutters to help prevent ice build up.  Unplug unnecessary appliances, such as the stove and microwave.
  • Be ready for emergencies - ask a trusted friend, family member, or neighbor to check-in on your home weekly and to be available in emergency situations.
